Hits
A hit is a single successful request for a file from a webserver.
A hit does not correlate with either a visitor or even a page view as all file requests generate a hit. Consequently most page views generate several hits, one for the HTML page, one for a CSS file, another perhaps for a .js file, and maybe 20 or so for images.
Web metrics expert Jim Sterne says HITS stands for "How Idiots Track Success". Harsh, but the truth often hurts.
