HTTP - HyperText Transfer Protocol

HTTP is the process used to transfer a webpage from a server to a browser or search engine.

It is an abbreviation of HyperText Transfer Protocol, which is a fancy way of saying 'the rules and pocesses for transfering a text document'.

The process can be summarised as follows, the browser (or search engine) sends a request (via DNS servers) to the web server asking for a 'hypertext' document - a webpage. The server records the location the request has come from and generates the document. The document is then sent back to the location originally requesting it.
