Meta Tags - Meta Information
Meta tags form part of the document head, and are used to describe aspects of the document, such as Title, Description and Keywords.
The structure of HTML is such that there are an unlimited number of Meta tags available - you can even create your own if you have a use for one. However, only a few are used by search engines.
There are many Meta tags that have either never been used, or are no longer used by search engines due to mis-use in Black Hat HTML. These include "revisit-after", "robots", and "expires".
The Meta tags that are important fro SEO purposes are the Title, Description and (to a much lesser extent) Keywords tags.
There is a common subset of Meta tags known as Dublin Core that are commonly used in organisational or academic HTML documents, but are also useful for general in-house audit trails. A specific subset of Dublic Core is eGMS, used by the UK governmental and quango organisations.
