UK Search Engines - Inktomi

Inktomi was founded in 1996 by Eric Brewer and Paul Gauthier, two students from The University of California.

The project was federally funded, encouraging Eric and Paul to reach supercomputing power under microcomputer prices.
Inktomi is based in Foster, California with offices accross the globe.

Inktomi is not a Search Engine site, it provides software to search engines and also provides indexed web pages to
search engines that do not have their own spidering software.

Inktomi provide software for internet companies such as HotBot, AOL Netfind, Yahoo, ICQ, iWon, Geobe dropping
Inktomi for newcomers Google.

Just over two years from that in December 2002, Yahoo announced the probability of acquiring Inktomi by March the
following year. Yahoo denied allegations of dropping Google in favour of Inktomi and using them as a fallthrough
provider.

In March 2003, Yahoo acquired Inktomi as planned. Yahoo used Google as their fallthrough provider. The chairman
and CEO of Yahoo, Terry Semel said 'bringing together the powerful combination of Yahoo’s global audience with
Inktomi’s leading search technology, will allow us to create of the most relevant, comprehensive and highest quality
search offerings on the Web for both our affiliate partners and Yahoo!'. Yahoo also acquired Overture in the same
year.
