Lycos
UK Search Engines - Lycos
In 1994 Lycos was created by Dr. Michael L. Mauldin and researchers at the Carnegie Mellon University Centre for Machine Translation.
In July 1994, Lycos was launched and at that time had an Index of 54,000 web pages and less than a month later 390,000 web pages had been recorded. This number rocketed to over 60 million by the end of 1996.
The founder, Mauldin created a new company in which Lycos was licensed to this company from Carnegie Mellon in 1995 and in the following year the company went public. The company then went on to acquire Wired Digital, the owner of the HotBot search engine.
In June 1995, Robert J. Davis became the first employee of Lycos, leading the company from having $2 million in venture capital to a multi million dollar business. With his involvement Lycos went from an internet Search Engine to one of the most powerful Internet hubs and media companies in the world.
