MSN was launched in September 1998, coincidentally the same time as Google.

The success of MSN can be put down to the number of services it provides such as hotmail, messenger and forums and because of it's popularity does not need its own search data, and relies on search databases such as LookSmart and Inktomi.

It has been suggested recently is developing its own spidering technology, thus reducing its dependence on third
party databases.
