When choosing your keyphrases it is important obviously not to make them too generic such as 'football net' and the like but it is also important to think of related words to go with them.
Most search engines in order to define the relevancy of a site will check that they are used in context and one way is to check for semantic keywords, in other words phrases and words that go with the keyphrases you have chosen. For example the word 'rugby' is often connected with the word 'ball' or the word 'socks' is often connected to the word 'shoes', using these type of semantic words can boost your Rankings (I'm not suggesting you should try rank for the word rugby). A good way to find semantic words is to either use a Search Engine and search for your keyphrase and check the descriptions for the following results for words that appear often or you can use Overture (now owned by yahoo) to find regularly connected keyphrases.
